802.11n mimo trials begin

The Air-Stream Wireless Network Planning Team reported at our last meeting that they are currently testing the feasibility of using 802.11n on 5.8Ghz to increase through put on back haul links in the network. As with all things the best way to learn is by doing and this hands-on experience will be invaluable to the ongoing viability of the network into the future. Current testing is demonstrating exceptional performance over distances with links of 10kms showing it maybe possible to achieve synchronous data-rates of 90Mbps. Get connected

Digital Elevation Mapping

The powers that be have released new and allegedly better ASTER DEMs - Digital Elevation Maps - of the world.
www.gdem.aster.ersdac.or.jp
Unfortunately Australia and regions outside of the USofA have been down sampled to 3 arc-sec (90 metre) from the original 30m and 15m data. ASTER and SRTMv2 thus are at the same resolution - 1 "pixel" is 90m^2.

A small preview of the data can be found here on Air-Stream...

I have saved some images using both data sets of the Magill/Mt Lofty region visualized with 3DEM.
The "dimple" in the lower left of the SRTMv2 image is Thornton Reservoir and the high ridge running up to Mt Lofty upper right.

First testing of the WL-5470POE

I have begun testing the WL-5470POE indoor unit to become more familiar with the setup and I so far have found it very easy to setup and is doing all the things expected as described in their instructions manual. So rather than posting a whole bunch of screen grabs, here is the WL-5470POE Manual (6.1Mb). Which leaves me to just tell you about the areas of interest.

WL-5470POE Indoor Unit

WL-5470POE is an indoor Access Point with a rSMA antenna connector which is design for 12V or 802.3af PoE

WH-5420CPE Outdoor Unit

WH-5420CPE is an outdoor Access Point with a waterproof enclosure and built in with a 14dBi Antenna or external rSMA antenna connector.

FOR SALE - CHIMNEY ANTENNA MOUNT

I have a small quantity of chimney antenna mounts. These are all 'as new' condition. Very quick and easy to setup. No drilling required. Best and easiest way of mounting an antenna on older style houses.

I have used one of these at a setup for the last two years supporting a 3m tall mast with a 15dB antenna. It has proved to be strong enough to survive through the storms in winter.

Each kit comes with:
antenna Bracket
wire strap
wire clamp
x2 I-bolts
x2 U-bolts
x6 nuts
x6 washers

$15 each (normally around $33 at Bunnings)

Pickup from Seaton or DryCreek (depending what time/day)
Delivery *may* be available for little to no extra charge depending on your location and amount purchased

PCMCIA Hack

I have been looking at hacking apart a pcmcia card that i got for $10 from ebay. I took it apart the other day and noticed that it has a strange connector on it.. Anyone seen this before..?
I thought that it was a UFL connector but it doesnt appear to be. Some online forums said that it was mc or ufl but doesnt look like either..?
I shall get a pic in a day or so.. Just be patient.
