ASLAN #8 - The Wrap Up.

Well what a lan!

Sorry about the delay in review, had many a PC trouble, too many windows re-installs to count on one hand, and lots of sleepless nights! So lets get into it!

A new setup technique was trialled for this lan, in which all Admins setup on the friday night before the LAN. This proved to be very successful as it allowed us to do some more fine tweaking on the day to allow for a better experience on sat!

This time around we had 3 sponsors, Thermaltake, Razer and Photech. So thanks again to our sponsors who make these events even possible!

AHARS monthly meeting this Thursday, 15th May and other HAM goodness.

So its that time of month again ;) Yes the intense radio/puter/geek meeting weeks =) Adelaide Hills Amatuer Radio Society -
VK5BAR are having their monthly meeting on Thursday the 15th, May. I joined up as a member at the AGM in January. I finally received my certificate for my foundation licence last week, so I'm all good to go =)

I have a 10watt radio on loan from Jacqui and I've manged to listen to the WIA broadcast on Sunday morning. Only just mind, there was so much noise it was barely readable. Thats probably a task for this weekend is to get an antenna sorted for the 80 meter band. That was the clearest of all the available repeaters. The 40 meter band seemed pretty empty. The 10 meter band had the faintest of signals and the only thing I could pick up on 80 meters was the WIA broadcast. I had a 40 meter half wave length dipole strung across the front yard, well maybe more like a inverted vee, still need to build a decent balun too. Maybe HAMs don't get out of bed before 10am like other sane people? Maybe they've all been up late working the radio until the wee hours? ;) I need to get a better space for the radio and get an antenna up more permanently.

ASLAN #7: 10th of May!

As usual ASLAN is being held at the Mawson Centre from 10am until 10pm. That's 12 hours of lanning goodness all for the small cost of $10 payable at the door!

Open Street Map

Been doing some GPS trail work recently for Open Street Map, just commuting about, visiting friends, etc. Mostly in the Adelaide Hills area. More edits should show up over the next week as they get rendered and put on the main map.

Anyhow, just thought I'd post a link to where Linux.Conf.Au will be next year; Uni of Melbourne

Question & Answer Time #2 - Linux Conf 2008 Bus Travel / Tour

Question 2:
Is there another travel option available other than the bus travel / tour to Linux Conf 2008 in Melbourne, and that may be a little more cost effective??

Answer:
Yes, there is another option available but it will only take place if there aren't enough people....
If there aren't enough people wanting to go on the bus my second option was to get these people together and form a travel group and then make one booking and try to get a cheap flight to Melbourne, we can then share the Taxi Fare between us to make it cheaper for us all.

Let me know what you think about this option as well.

Cheers:
Grant Petch :)

Question & Answer Time #1 - Linux Conf 2008 Bus Travel / Tour

Question 1:
Isn't $180 both ways a little pricey for bus?, can get air their and back for $60 each way??

Answer:
Yes, I see the delema that you are raising, as I to have had to deal with it myself. I will explain to you a little clearer on how the pricing works -

I looked up Virgin Blue's Discount Fares on their website and came up with $125.00 for each way, hence would cost $250.00 return. You also then have the added expense of getting a Taxi from the Tullermarine Airport to take you to the Uni campus in Melbourne, this would cost about $35.00 each way depending upon the traffic in Melbourne, hence would cost you about $70.00 - All up $250.00 + $70.00 = $320.00 in total travel expense.

Linux.Conf.Au 2008, Community Wireless Miniconf - Updated Program

Miniconf logo

Ok, first things first, I've updated the program and while the times are still flexible, the speakers are slots are filling up. Today we found out that the time table needs rewangling, so I will have to shuffle it all up again =)

Also I have posted to a few developer mail lists trying to stir up some interest in the miniconf. I'm hoping to get a demo of OLSR in a reasonable sized mesh happening and send folks off home to play with it ;) It worked a treat when we tryed it at the LinuxSA meeting last time. We'll see how that goes.

Registrations are still open for Linux.Conf.Au, be sure to get in quick as tickets are selling fast. More information on the Community Wireless Miniconf wiki.

Presenter confirmed - Daniel Moscon - Linux.Conf.Au 2008, Community Wireless Miniconf

Daniels talk is tentatively titled "Outdoor Wireless Networking - Technical Challenges from Physical to Application".

We're getting pretty excited by the range of topics we're covering, but we are still looking for more!
Please pass on the message to those folks that you think would deliver a great presentation to the Miniconf and encourage them to send one in!
