Client Node

I'm new - here is my setup

Hi,

I'm new to Airstream and fairly new to all this wireless stuff!

Here are a couple of photo's of my setup. I'm trying to get connected to VK5tty. I have good LOS and my AP is connecting with a good signal, but there's no data flow. I think the router has locked up at VK5TTY.

Here's a picture of VK5TTY from my roof - you can't really make it out from this shot, but you can see it with binoculars.

New member - now what? :-)

Hi,

I'm a new member - joined up on Monday. I'm south of Vk5tty and have a good signal from vk5tty-2. So... now what? :-) How do I get on to the network? My antenna and AP are all ready to go, I think I just need IP addresses etc?

Thanks in advance!

Dave.

Adhocs Mt Barker node

Brain dump follows...

So over the last couple of weekends I've been tinkering with my node(s) after finally getting some phat coax sorted for the minitar APs that Rob give to use on the slotted wave guides. Along with a much shorter mast I'll be putting up something this weekend after taking it all down after the big winds!

Also in the last week I noticed a car load of bloke with laptops and small antenna driving around my block slowly. There was also a lot of DHCP traffic and lots of ICMP action against the node. So this is either good or not. Haven't decided, so I've dropped my node of my internet gateway/VPN end point in the mean time. I'm going to change the way it all connects anyway, so its pre-empted the decision about how I want to set it all up.

Which leads me to spending a bit of time scouring the net to see whats current after being quite a bit pre-occupied with other issues over the winter. This always happens. Spring is way more productive as I get to spend some quality time making in the shed =)

I won't be running a mini conf at LCA09. Didn't have the bandwidth to get a proposal together. So will probably be attending as a regular punter. Which will mean that I get to play with actual tech and watch whats going on rather than running about like a nutter organising stuff like I did this year. This year I setup much of the network and helped organise the Access Points and it was a long hard slog. Lots of cool stuff to see and do, but I missed out on a lot that went on. I didn't get to see any keynotes, and only a handful of talks. Not to worry, next year should be pretty amazing.

Some of Winters distractions involve selling my car, large work load, getting another, large work load, the new one being off the road in need of repairs, being a radio op at ROSA, illness, large work load, illness, car problems, too cold to work in the shed... you know, the usual winter fun. Not to mention it was too cold to work in the shed!

Projects ahead for the next couple of months; put up mast on the car port, setup AS-MtB-node1, AS-MtB-node6, AS-MtB-node11, with the slotted wave guides, dig real foundations, put up a propper tower, move nodes to new tower, setup nodes at a friends place, get my 2M gear moved to the shed and get that setup on the tower, build better power supplies, get permanent power to the shed, insulate the shed, move the rack to the shed, get the UPS repaired and running again ...

Are there ever enough hours in a day? That reminds me, need to finish of the podcast stuff and get that up now that the replacement cabls for my headphones came in today and ... erm ... stickers that right, got to get those stickers sorted... but wait theres more my file server went pop recently after a power up/down/up/down/up thing last week and need to build that up in a more redundant way. Also would like to setup something with the WIA guys that stream the news and work on something podcasty/streaming related... folks keep asking me about video of AS meetings etc, so video is something I'm going to have to have a look at soon too.

That will do for now. 73's

EeePC as a stumbling machine

Has anyone opened up their EeePC and connected a pigtail to its MiniPCIe wifi card for stumbling? Looking at some internal EeePC pics online it should be quite trivial to do (even if it does void your warranty). It's mentioned online that it uses u.fl connectors on the board, I assume a pigtail for this could be made quite easily with RP-SMA on the other end, does anyone have any thoughts about this?

Some pics online of the 701's 802.11G card (not my pics, just some i found):

FOR SALE - CHIMNEY ANTENNA MOUNT

I have a small quantity of chimney antenna mounts. These are all 'as new' condition. Very quick and easy to setup. No drilling required. Best and easiest way of mounting an antenna on older style houses.

I have used one of these at a setup for the last two years supporting a 3m tall mast with a 15dB antenna. It has proved to be strong enough to survive through the storms in winter.

Each kit comes with:
antenna Bracket
wire strap
wire clamp
x2 I-bolts
x2 U-bolts
x6 nuts
x6 washers

$15 each (normally around $33 at Bunnings)

Pickup from Seaton or DryCreek (depending what time/day)
Delivery *may* be available for little to no extra charge depending on your location and amount purchased

Gulfview Heights - possible redundant AP backbones

Ladies and Gents,

I've been a member of Air-Stream now for a few months and haven't particularly contributed thus far. I've been downloading a fair amount of content and will be putting up my own FTP server to "give back" to the community as well. I may, however, have the kind of location whereby I might be able to contribute a bit of redundant connectivity to the network.

I'm currently connected via EARC, which seems a pretty solid connection, although there have been some connectivity issues going further into the network, but there has been some maintenance going on.

Nagios (Mostly) Back Up

Have dug up backuped files and reinstalled the latest and greatest Nagios v3.0.1.
A minor issue in that my custom node icon is not being displayed .. still scratching the head on that one.

The localhost.cnf file has changed in format from the previous 2.x version which I was running and my old cnf file caused an error on nagios 3.0.1 startup, a bit of comparision and the new cnf format gleened .. (-:

Now have to chase up the new Air-Stream APs and nodes as I unfortunately lost that info with the hd crash, guess an rsync script running off of cron needs to be set up - all those ~/etc/ files can be easy to overlook when backing up!

Request to the air-stream overlords

Is there any chance the air-stream overlords could find it in their hearts to allow non paying members some wi-fi access???
even if its just IRC

Surprise access at the Mawson Lakes Hotel

Last night I had a meeting at the Mawson Lakes Hotel, which is adjacent to the Mawson Centre. I was pleasently surprised to find that I could not only see an Air Stream access point in the Mawson Centre, but I could actually connect to the Air Stream network (the access point was open).

I was able to immediately get through to www.air-stream.org and check my email, and (after nmap'ping my subnet as I had forgotten my IP addresses) get through to my servers. I was even able to update a wiki entry on MawsonLakes.Org (Internet: 202.174.42.5 Air-Stream: 10.106.0.4)

Well done to everyone at Air-Stream!

Marryatville ap getting closer to being an AP

This site has been here for a while, almost 5 months and slowly getting closer to becoming an ap. The latest upgrade towards that was an upgrade from a
-Celeron 333Mhz Pc
-256mb SDram
-20gb hd (o/s linux + other partitions)
to a new computer donated by DJ-Hip from his surplus storage
-AMD Athlon XP 2000+
-1GB DDR2
-20gb (temp dir), 13gb (apache www server) and 10gb (o/s Gentoo Linux)
This will provide a lot better traffic flow when the ap is put up, as the Cel 333 was strugling with running when there was no ap. The wireless gear has remained the same 25db Hills dish to skye, Atheros 400mw card. The ap card is installed (sort of) which is a orinoco 20mw card. This will be upgraded as it is very very week for an ap.
The computer/server also moved in my roof, here are some pics.
