Pasadena will be having its first major upgrade in a series of stages which will increase the performance of the access point.
In the first stage the old router will be replaced. This it self should stop the breakdowns which are a far too common thing.
Installed will be:
2 x Senao MiniPCI cards
- One for the Ottoway backbone
- One for the omni for clients to connect to.
2 x Mini-PCI 802.11a/b/g wireless card
- One for Melrose backbone
- One for Julia Farr backbone.
In the future this will allow a 802.11a wireless link.
This will be housed in a mini-PCI cradle
The benefits are:
New router
No more crashing of the router and hardware conflicts (time will tell ;).
802.11a ready
Once Julia Farr is 802.11a ready all that is needed is to change the antennas and set the mini PCI to use the 802.11a standard.
Increased throughputs
802.11a is faster and doesn’t overlap each other. Also 802.11b will be freed up.

Let me know when you start ripping stuff out so I can come and grab the equipment and use it elsewhere, I should be able to do Melrose within the next month(hopefully more like next 2 weeks), should be able to aquire 5Ghz dishes aswell without too much drama(good prices :) )

There is issues with the senao pcmcia on linux as well atm, hopefully the shift to bsd will get rid of this, bloody cradles are so picky.

New router was delivered to PAS on Tuesday and is awaiting James for installation.

Pasadena upgrades have been scheduled for the past week, however, due to conflicting availability of crew to do the installation it has been delayed a little. The new hardware will be installed and configured tonight, so please expect some downtime.
DOWNTIME: 9:30 pm Monday, 4th July 2005
DURATION: 1 hour max
If all goes well, downtime could possibly be reduced to just a few minutes.
NOTICE: Pasadena upgrades 5th July 2005
The new hardware was installed and configured last night, but due to a faulty component from the Old router the new server has been damaged.
Unfortunately, we have not been able to boot the Old router, so please expect some downtime.
As a result the new server will need to be repaired and a different wireless configuration is require, due to tests carried out on the night.
Fortunately, we have a couple of motherboards available which we can use so "don't panic" it will happen.

NOTICE: Pasadena upgrades 7th July 2005
We have completed the new Router and as a result it has been upgrade to a P4 1.8Ghz CPU and after testing/repairs we will be no longer using the Senao Cradles and consequently we are completely moving over to MiniPCI which have been proven to be stable and will allow for easier upgrades to multiple 802.11a backbones in future.
This will be installed once additional miniPCI cards are sourced.

Pigtails arrive monday, We will be completing some thorough testing and everything will be ready for intallation in a few days.

Thanks to some help from Google and Mark Koskenmaki a Technician from North East Oregon Fastnet, we where able to find a fix.
This involved cutting a track on pin 13 of the CM9 card. Even though it seems the pin doesn't connect anywhere nor can it be traced with a multimeter, the fix worked?
Anyway we now have a working router that supports the CM9 for 802.11a backbones.
