what is the best way to get a pc going on Linux preferrably whit a GUI interface.
I loaded smoothwall Express 2.0 on the an old PC and as far as I can see from docs is should run a GUI, but I just have a dos looking screen with a # prompt?
I want to play and learn but am starting as a raw Linus newbie

ubuntu
that or red hat or mandrake
are next next next done and come up with a GUI
personally I like gentoo, but thats because people poisoned my mind, honestly if you do want to learn linux gentoo can be a good education experience
www.tldp.org can eb your friend while learning
Sam
gui
try typing "startx" to start the X window GUI or "GDM" or "KDM" for the gnome desktop manager/kde desktop manager.
I dont know smoothwall specifically but most distros are the same.
Ive been using slackware linux for years and it is stable and pretty easy.
interface
Im pretty sure Smoothwall only has a HTTP interface, havnt used it myself but that was my understanding
yes
yes, looks like smoothwall is another OS for thin client, firewalls, etc.
from http://www.smoothwall.org/:
Designed for ease of use, SmoothWall is configured via a web-based GUI, and requires absolutely no knowledge of Linux to install or use.
I am sure there would be enough docs or forums there to help you if thats what you want.
It looks to me that you actually want to play with linux.
You dont say exactly what specs your old comp has, so that would help recommending a linux distro for you.
I have slackware running grand on a pentium 850Mhz, and Im sure it would be fine on even a pentium 200.
Give us some more info and we'll give you some!!

Smoothwall
Hi smoothwall has a web interface like Duncan suggested.
So once setup goto another machine on the same LAN and use the internal "green" IP address like 192.168.100.2:81 in your browser address.
It should display a 'summary' page.
