Has anyone had any luck with non los link’s using 900 MHz?
I have got a yagi board antenna with a quoted 6 to 7 bd gain (http://www.wa5vjb.com/products2.html ) with a small alloy corner reflector added on the roof (http://users.adam.com.au/dron/mtbarker.html )
I have an sr900 in my RB433 , the other end is a sr900 in an RB 112 and another yagi board this time with a curved stainless steel reflector ( section of heater flew) hooked to a laptop in the Ute. Over the top of the hill (between me and Mt Barker cbd). Both cards are set to 2ghz-10mhz on 922 mhz. I get a link of about 1km with a signal of -82 and a noise floor of -101. This link is with NO line of sight and well below the crest of the hill. At about 4 km (where I am trying to get to) I get some information and an occasional glimpse of the ssid .
I am hoping that someone has an idea on better antennas or cards for this link
Darren

we had the same sort of
we had the same sort of issue trying to get round a massive shed, either side we could see glimpses of the node and i thought perhaps 900mhz could be the way to get through it or over it?
i like the ingenuity of the heater flu :D
best polarization ?
Hi all
Can anyone recommend the best polarization for the 900 MHz link? I now have two rfi industries yb806-94 yagie's new from EBay ($ 44.95 ea)
They have an 11 db gain and using 1 pointed at my old antenna I get a 7 db lift in both the Rx and TX signal. If the wind slows today or tomorrow I will go up on the roof and fit 1 but I don’t know what will be the best polarization and I try to keep off the steep 2 story roof and would like to get it right the 1st time
Thanks
Darren
Polarisation
There is no advantage in what polarisation you use other then reducing interference from unwanted sources. As the signal reduction between two different polarisations is as much as -20db.

Almost got it
Hi
I just tested the link into Mt Barker. I can’t get past the roof next door. I can see everything to the freeway side of that. I got a NON line of sight link at -71bd at about 4.5Km with the yagi on my mast pointed at the edge of the neighbour’s roof blocking at least 50% of the fensal zone and the hill behind blocking the rest. 900 MHz seems interesting! I was close to the power limit and will need to check the maths. Gain + input less estimated losses added up to 35.5db. I have just turned it down for now as I think I may have been pushing things just a bit.
I am about to turn it to Narine to see how that works.
Darren
can get a link to Narine
Just a quick update on how I went testing between Mt Barker and Narine. I can get a good link from the Primary school, Parts of Britannia RD, Some of Jeffery St, Shakes Rd, through to some of summit Rd. I got a solid link with the antenna hand held out the window of the Ute in most of the Mt Barker side of town. I had my access point set up to see the summit side of town meaning the Primary school would have been at least 25' left of that, I still got a -72db signal. I believe I should also be able to get a link in the new estate both sides of Woodside Rd if I swing it back that way.
I have lent the 900 MHz card and router to someone over that way to see if He can get a link from his place. If not maybe there is someone else in Nairne that can see the Dalmeny access point will be interested in installing the gear.
Next attempt to link into Mt Barker
I have turned the 900mhz yagi to Mt Barker. The 2nd sr9 is in a rb112 with a low powered 2.4g card. The 2nd yagi is going up in Mt Barker tomorrow afternoon. With any luck the link will be up by Sunday night.
I have been trying to set up a network drive for a ftp server. I got what I thought would be the ideal unit A netgear stora 1tb.
So far I have had to hack the thing to give me Local access ( It wanted me to log in viar a remote sight and leave 4 ports open in my router),a root log in,and to enable sftp. I can't log in to it with anything but a windows system using a web browser . It will let me use firefox in vista to access it but if I log on using firefox in ubuntu 10.04 I get the log on screen but cant see any of the folders or setup screen.
Has any one had any luck with one of these network drives or do I salvage the 1tb drive and scrap the rest
Got it
Hi
Don has just finished his end of the 900 link. We can see each other at -75 to -77 db on a non los link with a noise floor of -99 to -101db with the TX at 25 with an RF 806 11bd yagie at each end.
After starting out trying to get a 2.4 link .The 1st test with his end hand held using a home router connected to a 24 db mesh giving a -54 in summer only to find a tree that is blocking the line of sight stops almost the entire signal as soon as it gets wet. Then trying all sorts of antennas and radios in a routerboard only to end up with 2 sr9,s. I can only say that things are never as simple at they seem at the start. At least we seem to finally have the 1st link about to go up full time.
It is up but
Hi
I have got the link up. I can ping the other end,and every other part of my network
I have set up a dns server and it has allicated an address for the link,A 2nd server for the AP with a hot spot working.
I can see traffic from my home router to the link and from my AP to the link,
I can log on to my ap from a laptop and use the internet
I have regular users that log in as trial users for there 15 minets a day,
I can log into the wed interface of the routerboard
But I cant seem to get any access from My Desktop computer through my ADSL router to the other end of the link.
I think I am about to start Learning about the big scairey wourld of NAT
Yes I am working on this local WAN so I can learn about networking. I Started from 0 and now think it is about to get interesting
Any pointers on what as well as where to go next would be appriciated
Thanks
Darren
NAT
On RouterBoardOS... http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/NAT_Tutorial
Otherwise which OS?
ZyXEL nat
I may have to disable the dns server in my modem and do it that way I was trying to set things up using My Zyxel 2602HW without much luck to date
the guide will be a handy link all the same. May even help working out the zyxet. Diffrent interface but it should be based on the same rules
Thanks
Missing something
Hi
Still playing.
Today I have added a web and ftp server using freenass 7.2 on a PC Engines Alix 2c10.
I can access it on the local network. I can ping the other end of the link from freeness.
I can see and log onto the routerboard on the other end in winbox from my desktop pc.
I can see all of the ip addresses on the other end using torch on my routerboard.
I even see some of the other end addresses in my local router log (I do know and trust the person and network on the other end and there is no free addresses on the 900 MHz links address pool)
If Don (other end of the link) uses the freeness web server address ( 192.168.1.250/nas) he can't access it
He can’t ping it
I can’t ping his network beyond his end of the link but his iphone has been given an ip address from my ZyZel router after logging into his local 2.4 gig wireless network?
I think I need some time with someone that Knows what they are doing. I can unbolt the gear and bring it to someone if needed. Working it all out without any networking knowledge is not going so well at the moment. Online guides only go so far and most seem to requiar a pre existing knowledge
