next g modem repeater

Hi all
I was asked by a friend if there is a way to improve his Telstra next g connection. He lives at Woodchester in the hills and is in the fringe of the nearest tower. There is no ADSL where he is and now that isdn has been turned he is stuck with next g. I have got him a yagi to replace the omni on his roof. I was wondering if there is a good mini pci card to put into a routerboard to replace his Telstra modem. It may be necessary to mount it on a tower on the top of the hill and set up a link back to the house. With any luck he will get Optus or Vodafone from the hill as Telstra is not all that good on price per gig

what mobile provider?

what does he use for his mobile optus or telstra?

i use an optus usb stick with a small 6db omni at sea, and i get signal all the way to yorke pennisula but with next g i only get 1 hr either side

only telstra

He can only get Telstra from his house. May get Optus or vodaphone on the hill above the house but that would need a remote modem and wifi link. This seems to be a common problem in the hills at the moment.

Isdn had its use but it is long gone leaving Satellite with its lag times or mobile broadband with its cost and constant drop outs. If you are not in a town you have problems, All this within 100kms of the Adelaide CBD. Must be fun to be in a remote location. His other problem will be cost. Working part time and on part pension after a transplent operation just adds to the challange.

I have found some Mini pci-e cards that will do HSDAP quad band and do cover 850 mhz with the high speed (7.2) http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250657922619&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT ( New Dell 5520 EU860D Mobile Broadband (HSDPA) Mini card). They should be compatable with telstra. I don't know if they will work in a routerboard. I was thinking the rb 411u would be the go with a pci-e slot and a mini pci slot

If you're looking for something a bit more reliable than USB sticks for 3G, I have been successfully using some Sierra cards for the past 12 months and they work flawlessly. They are not all supported by Router OS though, so you need to check the hardware compatibility list. The model I've used is MC 8795V which is quad band I believe, and has a uFL connector onboard.

The card presents itself like a USB device to RouterOS and there are a few tweaks to get the right channels and such. Let me know if you consider it and need more info on configuration or where to buy.
