Hey Everyone,

just my introduction, new member, names Nathan.
unfortunatly ill be in Canberra for the next members meeting, but i should be at the next one.

looking to put up a connection in Ottoway, just off Grand Junction rd, ive updated my member database (although the google map is a bit out)

got a few bits together already, 24db/cables/connections/box/server/USB stumbling gear... good laptop with more than 20mins battery! :D

just working on a mast, to mount it on top of my air con, and perhaps a Omni

Welcome Nathan

Great Nathan thanks for giving us all an update where you are at, sounds interesting, look forward to hearing how it goes, I'm sure some members will offer a hand.

did some stumbling on the

did some stumbling on the roof, tried out this nifty usb AP jacked it into the 24db and i think we worked it out that the dish was getting 11-12db after cable loss+only 50mw of power :(

still good enough to stumble, did a full sweep and unfortunately i didn't pick anything up... just lots of random networks around me. its a shame that the ottoway air-stream went down a few years back, would of been like 900m to connect to it!, i think there was an old member on here that used to connect to it, called "HaQue" his setup is like 200m down the road from me!

looking to getting a proper AP with some 200mw action together with some low loss cable; should be good for 20-22db to the dish! then ive got to find someone to connect to! next week going to borrow some binoculars see what i can see.. i might be keen to setup an omni if its worth it for others to connect to me too.

Just made an order on

Just made an order on Freenet for some more goodies, as to make a start with my setup and also see if it worth getting 2x more members signed up!

130mw AP
pigtail
19db dish

just need a waterproof box now, anyone know where to get one from?

Try Jaycar for a IP65

Try Jaycar for a IP65 weatherproof box (http://jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=HB6129 etc), or my favourite; a spray painted biscuit tin from Big W :D

well i got some more gear

well i got some more gear (19db+130mw Ultrawap) did some more stumbling and managed to pick up AS Blair Athol! fantastic! i also was picking up some ASLAN thing i dont know if its related to the LAN up north..? could of been just another random wifi signal

was only getting 14-15% connection so with my 24db proper mounting and some aligning could possibly be better, also looking into a stronger amplifier; from a little hunting on the net didnt look like there was much of a sizeable difference from 90/130/200mw and i think thats the highest you can go?

so what is next, i guess i need to find out how high the blair athol setup is so i know what to aim for. can anyone assist me or point me in the right direction?

AS Blair Athol node

Unfortunately the Blair Athol node is not yet connected into the rest of the network. I'd estimate the site is about 25m ASL, and the antenna perhaps 10m above ground level. It'd have a great view towards Otttoway though.

Some stumbling, about 10m lower, from an adjacent property a few years ago did manage to pick up then (then) Ottoway site.

cheers

Steve

so what is needed to get it

so what is needed to get it connected to the rest of the network? i would be willing to help get it online beneficial to everyone :D

do you think 15% is good enough connection to try? after some aligning i think it could be a bit better and since its quite high in the air should be easy for me to make a decent mount.

Don't be discouraged

Every node connection is important, it is the way the network grows, one node leads to another. Unfortunately this is a difficult area and the network planning team are looking for ways to get a connection into Blair Athol, as it has the latest gear their and so will become a core node when this happens

One of the best ways to encourage more work to be invested into Blair Athol is for members to connect to it.

Good luck sound like your on the right path.

keen as i am, i must learn

keen as i am, i must learn patience!

going to take me a while to setup my mount, and get another AP with a poe built-in to it. what sort of latest gear? is it running at G speeds? are there any more details or pics of the setup?

whom would i talk to about getting an IP when i eventually get myself organized; (and when it stops raining!)

Current Hardware

We are currently using RouterBoard RB433 - http://routerboard.com

Wireless cards we use are R52H from Mikrotik http://www.mikrotik.com and XR2 for Accesspoints from Ubiquiti http://www.ubnt.com

Hardware can be sourced from Wifi Extreme http://www.wifiextreme.com.au which can also be collected from members meetings.

RouterOS on the routerboards have a protocol called NSTREME which is a different mac to mac80211.
NSTREME bascily removes overheads from mac80211 and also removes the ack timeout issue which restricts the distance you can get out of 802.11a/g and improves performance for point to multipoint.

I have also sent you an email about whats to be done for Blair Athol to become fully operational.
