What Router/AP to use

I am wondering if anyone out there can indicate whatRouter/54mhz ap is available which supports a Client mode and has multiple VPN tunnelling and a builtin Bigpond Cable client on the WAN side.

Im looking for one to play with on Air Stream but still be useful at home.

currently I have a seperate router (DI704P) and AP the router works a treat for cable internet and vpn for work but the ap (a netcomm thing np5400 I think) doesnt have a client mode and when I try to VPN to work using the wireless its doesnt work!

any suggestions for a good router/ap which will do what I want???????????

there are very few routers with two wireless interfaces included even less that support client mode

yoru best bet if you liek hacking is to get two linksys wrt54g and put openwrt operating system on them an run your pptp from the one in AP mode and put the other into client mode

what is your level of experience with linux?

Sam

hmm

I don't think he wanted 2 wireless interfaces, just a 54Mbps that does client mode..I dont know of one! I'll research tonight.

HaQue is correct

I want an router/ap in one (line the DI824) but it must have built in Bigpond Cable client and VPN tunneling and IPsec support for my work VPN AND also be usable for connecting air-stream in clientmode.

my current AP doesnt do client mode and will not tunnel the work VPN even though the netcomm support bloke today said it should without any fancy setting up or mod.

thanks to you both

Connecting

Didz's picture

Wouldnt it be better to purchase a separate access point for connecting to Air-Stream? then keep your current unit for home use.

yes and no

cougar's picture

yes that would make sense for Airstream but still leaves me with the problem of no VPN for work over the home system which works fine otherwise, trying to kill 2 birds with one stone.
I was not planning to use it for both home and Airstream at the same time trying to save cash outlay

AP

cougar's picture

sounds ok,
what APs run client mode and dont cost the earth.
with removable antenne of course

wrt54g

samiam's picture

this runs in client mode doesnt cost the earth

but requires openwrt firmware to be installed voiding your warantee and requireing quite a bit on unix knowledge

wrt54g

hmmm not for me then, tho I would like to play more with unix/linux im too busy and so need a boring Windoz solution.

there must be more that this unit with client mode surely

basically anything called a bridge...

samiam's picture

Anything that is a bridge or a client rather than an AP will work suprisingly enough as a bridge or a client

contendors are the wireless game adapters such as a Dlink dwl810 or whatever the modern equivlant is should do the trick

but I dont think anybody has tried these over distance

the recieve senstivity and transmit output strength determines what is a good unit

the minitar AP used to work in client mode and had all the features you require, but it is now off the market

That is the only reason I suggested the wrt54g running openwrt

If you asked someone to setup the firmware for you then it should be a set and forget operation.

Sam

basically anything called a bridge

cougar's picture

Hi sam,
Are you volunteering :)

I will see whats available, looking closely at TX power and Rx sensitivity and see what I can find if all else fails I will give you a yell.

I think your in the Western Burbs arent you ?

openwrt hacking

samiam's picture

I think I could probably knock it over in about 1-2 hours for inital config

VPN, quagga BGP routing, wireless client and dnsmasq (DNS and DHCP)

just need to get me all your network details and wireless settings

so you need to get in contact with your AP admin and get all these numbers and do a signal survey to make sure you get at least -90 to -85dBm from netstumbler. -40dBm would be even better ;)

but I dont have time to tutor you in linux, so it woudl end up being an ongoing service thing if it doesnt do what it needs

but if you have a exisiting internet connection I coudl probably administer it remotely

openwrt hacking help

cougar's picture

thanks Sam I think I will go down the bridge route for now and see what happens.

I have an old laptop a toshie 1910cs I may put linux on and have a play but the mach has no CD drive, its currently got windox95 on it , no loss if I trash it :)

first job , get some pigtails and get an antenna up on the tower while waiting for the hardware to arrive. I wish it was warmer I may be able to do it this weekend but its too damn cold for me.

Jacqui

no CD Rom no worries

samiam's picture

most linux distros can work on a floppy and a net connection

have a google

I like gentoo, but redhat FC3 or ubuntu are kidn to beginners

Sam

found one

cougar's picture

ok I may be onto something here anyone got any opinions on a Dlink DWL2000 AP+ in client or bridge mode.
the TX is about 15DBM and rx sensitivity is -70 ish on 11G.
price is a little higher that I wanted but in the ballpark

thoughts

BTW I am at Fulham Gdns with Seaton, Grange sailing club and SAPUG all close and have a 10Mtr radion tower in the backyard and access to LDF450

Mark Router

Didz's picture

Why not go for a Mark router/server and have it all in the one unit.

Ethernet Bridges

Here is some notes on ethernet wireless bridges, feel free to comment it's only a draft at present.
