Foxtel dish

I just dragged out an old Foxtel dish and looking at it, it would appear that it is originally set-up for horizontal polarisation as its higher than it is wide?

I just tried a USB WiFi adaptor at the original focal point but not having much success yet, would that be about the spot?

Off-Set Dish

It can be done with a cantenna and other things like a usb, what you have is an offset dish.
This might help

dish polarisation

cougar's picture

the polarization of the dish is actually set by the orientation of the LNB/LNC not the shape of the reflector surface so when feeding the dish with a cantenna or a corner feed like http://www.qsl.net/yu1aw/vhf_ant.htm the polarization is set by the orientation of the cantenna or corner feed

Thanks Robert for those

Thanks Robert for those sites.

Thanks also Cougar, the reason I was questioning the orintation of the dish it self is that it is oval in shape.

In its currect form it is higher than it is wide, so what your saying is that it wont matter if its not turned?

Oval Shape

parabolaIn an off-set dish the reason for its oval shape is nothing to do with polarization, it's more about following half of a parabolic curve and creating the most efficient shape in terms of manufacture. Think of the shape of a normal parabolic antenna where the antenna feed is in the centre. Then cut it in half, for practical reasons you would then point the antenna feed towards the remaining half. There is no reason big reason they can't be round but more difficult to manufacture to achieve the correct shape, where the oval shape is much easier to manufacture.
