Bit Torrent Tracker - Experimental

Since failing at my attempts in getting an FTP Server going behind my firewall setup (damn dynamic ports, too hard CBF, and any other excuse) I've instead setup a Bit Torrent Tracker as a bit of an experimental exercise, and since there doesn't appear to be one on the AS network as yet. I'm aware that a BT Tracker is a bit out of place on a network such as Air-Stream but I wanted to do it anyway :)

The interface will annoy you with login requests which can be happily cancelled 7 or 8 times before they disappear, so I've setup a Guest account:
user: Guest
password: BTT

You can always "Sign Up" with your own username and password if you want, just follow the links. There's only a single torrent on there so far but I'll be adding more as the days go by. Please give 'er a shot and reply here with any comments or criticisms if you feel the need. It is located here: http://10.121.129.4:6969

Update 1: I've just done some more testing and it looks as if there are a still a number of things I need to sort out to get it working as expected. I'll update as things get sorted...

Update 2: The tracker should work fine for others to upload torrents to, but I can't seed at the moment due to the tracker seeing my torrent client in my DMZ as opposed to on the external Air-Stream network. So if anyone else wants to upload and seed a torrent, give 'er a shot and give me some feedback

G'day dekrow.

We actually used to have a Bit-Torrent tracker running on Air-Stream.

The issue is, BitTorrent requires multiple sources to work effectively, in a multipath environment.

Air-Stream currently has no multipath setups (well, technically we have 1, but its not fully implamented), so all data runs along a single line Node1-Node2-Node3 etc. So when multiple people start "leeching" the files, the network grinds to a halt basically, as everyone tries to leech from the same source and it doesnt evenly redestribute. We did atest with 5 people from 5 different locations leeching the same file, and it took us 4 days to get 1G via BT vs 1 hour via FTP.

Also the other issue with using Bit-Torrent is the fact it requires alot of effort to put files up. I know you are having issues with your FTP, but it may be worth investigating it more, as it is a much more effective mode of transfer on our current network setup.

The last issue is that the bit-torrent tracker would undoubtly have "questionable content" on it... which if you read this: http://www.air-stream.org.au/coc isnt allowed.

Just something to think about. Also can save your own butt by having logins only ftp, as it reduces the risk of the unwanted happening.

I'm not trying to blow all your hopes and dreams to bits, just giving you a heads up on previous experiences we've had here on Air-Stream :)

Bit Torrent

Thanks for the info Shawn, I'll familiarise myself with the COC and have a harder look at sorting out an FTP.

A lot of the stuff that I'll be sharing is gear I've downloaded from other FTP's on Air-Stream, and I'd be understating it if I said that a fair majority of it might be in a grey area.
