connecting from Kilkenny

Hi,

With Daniel's help I am in the process of setting up an Access Point. I have a Mikrotik RB333 with two mini-PCI cards, a 15dB Hills antenna, and an omni. A few weeks ago I managed to stumble Skye, however I can't seem to repeat the results this week with the new hardware. Is the Skye Omni still working OK? I get sniffs of Skye at low level (0 SNR) but from no particular direction.

However I have a 12-24 dB SNR signal to Burnside-V, and am attempting to connect to it. I seem to be able to associate OK but can't ping anything (e.g. 10.122.128.1 or 10.122.128.33 which I am attempting to use as a GW).

Anyway, looks like I am getting there. Any suggestions are most welcome.

Cheers,

David

15dbi?

Hi David,

I'm surprised you chose a 15dbi dish when you where stumbling with a 18dbi and given your link distance a 25dbi would be the best choice even if the signal was good a higher gain antenna can also reduce noise and interference, due to the narrower beam width.

Also you can't use an IP assigned to Skye for another AP, and unfortunately I'm unaware of the existence of an AP at Burnside, as nobody has added it to the list on the website, however it maybe added to the new members node database, but that won't be available to members to use until it is launched at next weeks meeting.

Robert

PS: for specific questions on access please email committee

Bunside AP

I check the Node Database and it does appear there is an AP, so at present you'll need to e-mail committee for an IP, until the new node database is launched at next weeks meeting.

Hi Robert, The 15dB antenna

Hi Robert,

The 15dB antenna is the same one I was stumbling with - I am just confused about the actual gain (could be 18 or 15)! I didn't specifically choose it for this application, it's an antenna I have had for a few years so I thought I would give it a try. We can always go for a higher gain antenna if required.

Has anything happened to the Skye Omni in the last few weeks? I am curious why the signal has changed for me.

Re the IPs I have been working with Daniel on this and will refer to the committee for further questions. I think the main issues are my learning curve in setting up the AP and router for Air-Stream.

Thanks,

David

Skye ok

I'm fairly sure Skye is quite ok and has been running without a hitch.

Stumble from Magill

ross's picture

Ran up kismet on my R100 (biquad pointed generally Kilkenney way) and immediately the AP showed up

x ! Air-Stream-Kilkenny A Y 011 320 0.0.0.0 0B

Packets flooding in fast however there are 4 other APs on Ch11

Thanks for the report Ross,

Thanks for the report Ross, good to see. Daniel (Shadey) helped configure and fine tune my AP over the weekend. Some intermittent problems with the link to Burnside but overall it's working nicely.

Cheers,

David
