FireFox's Blog

I figured i would finally start on a blog, considering how many ladders, roofs, chimneys ive been up in the last few months would be easier to keep track of their progress.

A little while back i got some help from Nekron, machspeed2200 and pazza we constructed what is now AS_Ottoway connected to Gould creek. We upgraded my gear from a Ubiquiti Bullet2HP to a RouterBoard setup. normal 50mm galv pole 6m high, placed ontop of my chimney.

now running at the site:
* Mikrotik RouterBoard 433AH
* 2 x Mikrotik R52Hn
* 24db 2.4ghz Grid
* Superpass 8db Omni

Great Work Guys

Good to see so much activity happening, great work.

Robert

Rosewater Project

thanks robert! ive been quite busy over the last 2 weeks!

have been working on yet another site, which im calling 'The Rosewater Project' ;) i did a quick stumble a few weeks back and today i mounted an omni+bullet up today for testing, unfortunately being the equinox we ran out of light to do the cabling so its first thing in the morning! the site has good LOS to both my link Ottoway and zadzad2's Athol Park; also picked up quite alot of other node around too!

the total height of the chimney is 6.5m from the ground! so i just put up a 2m pole today with my awesome custom mounts which i have now perfected given my novice welding. The site scan picture was taken from the chimney height as i simply couldnt climb to the top, the incline on the roof is just crazy!

Site Scan

Results:

athol park -69
blair athol -73
gilles plains -88
gould creek -71
hillbank -74
ottoway -63
skye -76

modbury north -60
para vista -73
gilles plains2 -67
pasadena2 -62

plz note: we did find the issue with the crazy dbm readings, i compared them with a RB433AH +SR2 and they were off by 8~13dbm; im sure its the software im using until netstumbler's issue's are fixed for win7

Woodville Stumble

just back from work so its back to air-streaming again!

Got the keys to my new rental house in woodville/kilkenny and i did a quick stumble, being in west and surrounded by houses its flat and hard to even see the hills :( i did manage to pick up a few node with a 2m pole on the roof:

earc
athol park
gould creek
athelstone - very solid signal!

the site does have an 8m flagpole but i cant reach the top of it to put my omni up :(

got a few more houses to stumble this week, delfin island, rosewater and kilkenny.

Mitchell Park Stumble

another site and another member interested to get on, located in Mitchell park just off marion road. unfortunately he was unable to attend the meeting tonight :(

picked up a few sites

bellevue 75
melrose park 76
pasadena2 70

West Lakes Stumble

signed up a new member last night at the meeting, his name is matt (ravenit). did a quick stumble at his house in west lakes on delfin island and got some very good results:

gould creek
earc
gvh
skye
uleybury
athelstone
bellevue
abc

looking to setup a J pole mounted to his 2x storey house with some stays or guide-wires, for a possible backbone later on. for the moment will just be going the routerboard way (rb433, omni, 24db)

pictures are coming troy :D

AS_Kilkenny

more stuff going up in the western suburbs! after many years of waiting drowe finally has his gear up on a 6.5m pole on top of his roof!

was a busy and chilly sunday, Nekron, machspeed2200, zadzad2, pazza, drowe and myself all worked together putting up his equipment. first point of call was to install the harness points on the roof and then guidewire spots while the box and and pole was getting put together.

this site is running:
RB333
19db (for the time being)
SR2
8db superpass

special thanks to shadey for the gear, and for waiting around for us on sunday arvo to grab the pigtails!

Great to see members helping one another, and making fantastic progress by the looks.

Nice pics too :)

West Lakes (delfin Island)

Thanks Firefox for your help today, and the others on the phone, least I'm connected now got the following results
Currently a client setup maybe ad an AP when the funds allow $$$
This is to EARC through Gould creek, not to bad from the other side of town, might have to look at connecting to seaton later, will post some pics one day if Firefox doesn't beat me to it :)
Tracing route to 10.121.129.1 over a maximum of 30 hops

West Lakes (delfin Island)

Install went well, currently connected to Gould Creek for testing we will most probably rotate the dish to Seaton2 once the network is back up and running, north-south link has been down for about a week now. The mount is quite stable might need to look into putting a solid stay up/guidewires; its just a 1.5m pole on top of Ravenit's two-storey house in west lakes.

picked up:
GVH
Para Hills
Athelstone
Skye
Torrens Park
Belevue
Uleybury
Earc
Seaton2
Gould Creek

Gear currently on Delfin Island:
RB433
R52H
24db Grid

upgrading to omni later down the track, and if we connect to seaton2 a downsize on power and grid size.

Its great to see more stuff going up in the western suburbs! thanks again shadey for the gear.

does anyone know the command for putting pics side by side?

Duct Tape

Is there actually self amalgamating tape under the duct tape?
Also try to apply tape over top in a smooth fashion to reduce gaps where moisture could be held.
You can make it worse than having no tape at all if its incorrectly applied.

side by side

ross's picture

I just had a little experiment and putting images side by side was easy! Just don't put the "img src =" tags on seperate lines, put them all on one line if you want the images to be side by side - I guess non breaking spaces would be sensible ;-)

6m high scarecrows

yeah chris, had everything on the day cept for the tape. im more worried about the magpie's attacking the cable now. is there anything to prevent birds hanging around? scarecrow on my mast :P

thanks for that ross, i havent played with html since yr11 ill update this page later on this week, make it a bit more iphone friendly

Seaton2 clients connected

Finally got a gap in the rain and managed to fix up Delfin Island today, rotated the grid and connected to Seaton2 need to adjust some settings, in ravenit's routerboard.

Also Iaminsane is now connected as a client to Seaton2; currently running a single rb411 card.

Was going to have another look at Kilkenny, however drowe is out of the country again!

Port Adelaide Install

It was an exhausting solid 28hrs+ of work done over the weekend; was a very large build requiring power, walkway , 2x 6m pole installs, box mount, ladder all to be constructed on site. and everything had to carted up 10 flights of stairs! still yet to collate all the pictures taken. will do a complete writeup when the additional links go online.

its great to see enthusiasm again to get the network running well with redundancy, this site was majorly funded by Myself, Nekron, Iaminsane machspeed, Pazza. special thanks to Tanuki and Blue; for network assistance, cable work and for running downstairs just to get cable ties!

Some suggestions... * Swap

Some suggestions...

* Swap RB750 with a real switch. As forwarding will stop with software failure.
* Gaskets for spare pigtails.
* Replace Pigtails with LMR100
* Conduit for Power terminated to enclosure
* In future non round pigtail holes. Protects pigtails and radio connectors from damage when installing and removing cables.

Great work guys, finally

Great work guys, finally should be able to connect more people now over this side of town :)
